Materials that are easily combustible (trees, brush, grasses) are removed from a strategically created swath, the wider the better. All grass is stripped away and the ground is left largely barren. In the event of a catastrophic fire, this firebreak could be the difference between your property surviving unscathed, or battling a fire on home turf.
